New! Version Release Process & Critical Business Testing Process

Smoother Dentrix Enterprise Upgrades

To ensure a smoother upgrade process for new releases of Dentrix Enterprise, we have rolled out a new, more deliberate upgrade testing and software verification process. The core of this new process is a new program called Critical Business Testing (CBT). We are dedicated to more thorough research to help us fully understand the hardware and software in your environments before installing a new release. This means more transparency on both sides so we can make the best decision possible for your business. It also requires thorough testing of a new release in your environment, not just in the Henry Schein One test environment, to better understand how the release will function in your practices.

Note about Microsoft Server and SQL Server System Requirements with 11.0.48

Dentrix Enterprise supports the following Windows Server and SQL Server versions:

Operating System
  • Microsoft Server 2019 with latest updates
  • Microsoft Server 2022 with latest updates
Database Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019 with latest updates
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2022 with latest updates

2024 UDS+ Requirements

After reviewing the 2024 UDS+ requirements and consulting with the Health Resources and Services Administration, Henry Schein One has determined that there is no need to release a UDS+ update for Dentrix Enterprise this year.

Requirement 1 states that the minimum UDS+ data is for medical patients only. Dental was explicitly excluded in the requirements document published by HRSA.

Henry Schein is committed to helping our customer meet their regulatory requirements. In the coming year we plan to implement at least some of the dental specific data elements in the UDS+ reporting requirements.

Critical Business Testing Process

This new process will focus on truly partnering with your organization to understand your software and hardware environment and fully test the new release against your specific hardware, peripheral devices, 3rd party integrations, and software that touches the Dentrix Enterprise database.

This means:

  • Henry Schein One will rigorously test new releases in our environment until we have multiple successful results.
  • You will also test the release in a replica of your production environment (including matching hardware and other software integrations).
  • Based on testing results, we may recommend infrastructure and/or other plan adjustments for optimal release performance.
  • You will then evaluate the recommended changes and determine if you wish to make the upgrades. Once upgrades are completed, you will re-test the upgrade. If you do not want to make the recommended infrastructure changes, the software upgrade will not proceed.
  • Once both your team and the Henry Schein One team are satisfied that the upgrade is performing satisfactorily in your test environment, we will then upgrade the new version in your live environment.

Why Understanding 3rd Party Integrations Are So Critical

The environment in which Dentrix Enterprise runs is critical to its performance. Many 3rd-party integrations introduce bots that pull information from your live Dentrix Enterprise database. This can affect the performance of Dentrix Enterprise. Some integrations can add load to your system that wasn't accounted for in the Dentrix Enterprise system requirements, so your system performance may suffer. If we aren't informed of all systems and software running in your environment, we can't work with you to ensure optimal performance. We have designed part of the Critical Business Testing (CBT) process to understand your entire environment. That's why we've built the disclosure and testing of 3rd-party integrators and any software that touches the Enterprise database into the CBT process. This allows us to truly partner with you and guide you to help avoid the performance problems of the past. Should you have additional questions about this new process, please contact Customer Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will new versions of Dentrix Enterprise be Released?

Dentrix Enterprise will have two releases per year approximately six months apart. The next release, 11.0.49, is scheduled in 4th Quarter 2024.

Are there anymore Long-Term Support (“LTS”) versions?

The LTS program is being discontinued. We are transitioning to a new program that provides approximately 20 months of service and support for each new version starting with our next release 11.0.48 in June 2024. To ease the transition, our last LTS version, 11.0.43 will have service and support extended until April 2025.

Why was this change made?

While we wanted to deliver customer value quicker with more frequent releases, customer feedback indicated that the larger Enterprise customers required extensive planning, testing and training on releases. These factors made it difficult for our customers to take on new versions frequently. This new program offers the benefit of extended support while still allowing customers to take advantage of new features after the necessary upgrade planning.

What is a Critical Software Bug?

A critical software bug is a severe problem that can result in the following:
  • Data Integrity Issues: This type of critical bug involves the corruption, loss, or deletion of customer data. It is a situation where data is compromised to the point of affecting the customer directly, potentially leading to a significant customer trust issue and the need for immediate remediation.
  • Legal Implications: A bug falls into this critical category if it leads to a confirmed or potential violation of legal standards or regulations, such as HIPAA. In such cases, the customer’s legal team may need to be involved to address the compliance issues.
  • System Downtime: A critical issue here means a complete system outage, preventing customers from using one or more tools provided by the service. This does not refer to minor disruptions that have workable solutions or minimal impact on the customer's ability to use the system.
  • Critical Security Threats: This encompasses security concerns that have been investigated and confirmed by the customer’s security operations team. It refers to direct threats to the system’s security rather than vulnerabilities in environments outside of the provider's maintenance scope.
Each type of critical bug requires an immediate and specific response to mitigate damage, protect users, and restore full functionality as swiftly as possible.

Is there a version 11.0.47?

There will be no Version 11.0.47, which will allow for a clear differentiation of the new release cadence.
