State EPCS Mandate Compliance

Many states now require electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) because it’s a commonsense way to prevent “doctor shopping” and curb opioid addiction and dependence.

Unlike handwritten prescriptions, electronic prescriptions are logged by a state’s prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) – the electronic database of all the controlled substance prescriptions in a state. By establishing a PDMP and mandating EPCS, states are making it possible for prescribers and pharmacies to watch for and thwart prescription drug abuse.
